To embrace the grey so others see themselves more clearly.
Hello, my name is Randy Reed, and I have been blind since birth due to a genetic defect. I am the partner in crime to a rescue cat named Alex, and we enjoy listening to music, watching TV and reading books together. Independently of Alex, I also enjoy swimming, walking, rollercoasters and motorcycle rides. I also collect dragons and enjoy vintage video game soundtracks. I earned my B.A. in communication from Florida Gulf Coast University in 2011. Unwilling to accept a job that would trap me in an office cubicle with only a gold watch at the end of the Loyal Service Rainbow, I used my writing skills and methods of persuasion to convince Western Michigan University that I was a good candidate for their Blindness and Low Vision Studies graduate program. I earned my M.A. and became a Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist in August, 2014. I began working for my current employer, lighthouse education Center, in September of the same year. I taught compensatory skills that would allow adults to live independently with vision loss for three years, and then became an access technology instructor. I taught adults with vision loss how to access their computers, smartphones and tablets until I experienced burn-out/compassion fatigue last year.
I currently continue serving lighthouse as an Accessibility and inclusion Specialist. I spend my time collaborating with our agency’s departments and teams to make sure that everyone can partake in our services. It involves research, product trials, finding creative solutions to barriers to access and more. I am also involved with education for those who have people in their life living with vision loss. Check out my Indeed profile for a more traditional professional history.
I have been and continue to be involved with a number of volunteer (service learning for my fellow FGCU graduates) efforts. Here are some examples:
